October

Hello dear participants

This will be our last post this year . I hope you have enjoyed working in our blog. First of all I would like to tell you that you can come and participate in this blog whenever you want.

Well, ready for our last e-activities ?

I would like to speak about social networking. Probably you have heard about these two words. If you have not, click here

e- activity 1: Let’s start a social network-> Open an account at “blip”

A social network is a “ social structure”  made of individuals organizations (called nodes) that are tied by values , visions, ideans, friendhisp, like, etc. Probably you already belong to a social network: e-groups, photologs, facebook, MySpace, Twitter, del.icio.us, etc, NING. Don´t  you?

We can start our own social network. What about a musical social network? There is a website called : http://blip.fm  Once you get registered, you go to settings  and put the info you want to show about yourself . Then you look for the song or artist you want to listen on line and start a kind of “library” with your favourite songs. And the social fact? You can invite your friends to join blip. They will see you favourites and you will see theirs. In this way, you and your friends start sharing songs. But this does not stop there. Other blip members can visit your “musical library” and become your friends, too. That is how the social network grows and grows.

Oh, by the way, my ID is nelbaq, just in case you want to share music with me.

e-activity 2: Another social network-> Open an account at “Twitter

TwitterAre you a mobile fan? Can you live without that gadget? Do you phone people or do you send txt messages? If you like sending txt messages and save money , you can do it via Twitter. Twittering – it has become a verb as well ... everything is possible on the net – is called microblogging. Why? Because your posts are very short. When you wirte a message or “post” in Twitter, you can write a maximum number of words. So you can send txt messages to all your friends telling them what you are doing, reading, listnening to or playing at your PC.  It is an interesting tool. Try it!

e- activity 3: Some Grammar exercises for final tests?

Here is a link to a very good site with Grammar exercises to practise. Hope you find it useful: http://www.autoenglish.org/basicgrammar.htm .

Remember you can click on Archives, October 2007 and see what we did last year.

f- Halloween is on October 31st. Want to learn about this celebration? Click here

g- And finally, I would like to recommend you this site of a very hardworking teacher, web colleague, Nik Peachey. His blog is a fantastic site where you will find activities of different types and levels. I do recommend it to go on practising the language, even if you finish classes. Oh, by the way: Don´t forget to leave Nik a comment either you liked or did not the activity. Give him feedback, please.

This is the end of 2008 . See you next year!

Best , Nelba

September

Hello, participants:

Don´t you associate September with spring (click on this link and read to pick up vocabulary and ideas) and high school? Pic-nics, singing, having fun with friends? Let's talk about this topic.

Smiling flowere-ctivity Nº 1( I have changed the name "task" by e-ctivity, isn´t it cool?)

I will write some quotes to inspire you, and then I invite you to write one of your own or copy one you like in comments

"Be like a flower and turn your face to the sun."
by Kahlil Gibran

" 'Tis like the birthday of the world,
When earth was born in bloom;
The light is made of many dyes,
The air is all perfume:
There's crimson buds, and white and blue,
The very rainbow showers
Have turned to blossoms where they fell,
And sown the earth with flowers."
-by   Thomas Hood

e-ctivity Nº 2

peaceSpring is also associated with love...here is a very nice site where you can make posters  http://www.glogster.com/categories/

Please, look for the poster you like best to celebrate love (you can also make one , of course!) , copy the URL and paste it in your comment so you can share it with all of us.

e-ctivity Nº 3

Finally, I would like to present you a different e-ctivity. Get a microphone and get registered at this site: http://chinswing.com

Chinswing is a global message board where anyone can add voice messages to ongoing topical discussions. Share your personal interests or hobbies, debate hot issues or find answers to questions. They've combined features of podcasting, text forums and live voice chat to create a whole new way to talk.

I have recorded a meesage to start a discussion about what is your dearest memory from those spring days when you were a teenager. Click on the following link and leave your message. I will be looking for hearing your voices. (Speak loud and clear  )

http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=fec722e4-f278-43fd-917a-49e6ce22dea8

Before I forget... We have a "brother" blog. A colleague of mine is working with her students in a blog similar to ours. The URL is  http://lablevelten.blogspot.com/      Have a look at it and leave them comments.

Before Winter Holidays

Hello, we are in July. Fortunately it is not so cold as it was last year.

It snowed on July 9th 2007, remember?

Here we are to do some activities before winter holidays.

Exercise 1: Pronounciation surprise

Do you want to improve your pronunciation? Why don't you try the site that appears below? It is a text-to-speech program on line. You can choose the voice of a man or woman (male or female). You just type or copy and paste the text you want to listen. Then, click on: “SAY  IT” , on the right top. Be careful, it can't read 100 % (per cent), but most of words are OK.

Copy in comments the URL you get once you have typed and heard your message.

Good luck.

http://text-to-speech-translator.paralink.com

Exercise 2: How technological are you?

Frente a PCsDo you know what a browser is? It is a computer program used for accessing sites or information on the World Wide Web. For example: Internet Explorer or Firefox. But now, what is a meta- browser????

Well, it is a highly organized or specialized one. For example, this one: Click on the link with your right button and choose " open in a new window" , please.http://www.searchcrystal.com/home.html

You will see that you can look for images, videos, blogs, tags, etc.

The topic will be FRIENDSHIP because we celebrate friendship day on July 20th. Look for whatever you like and share the URL you have chosen with us in comments and give reasons.

Road to Grammar

Exercise 3: Free Grammar Practice. Here I present you a website where you can practice any grammar topic you do not feel very confident about. Click on the image on the left,  and do as many exercises as you want.

More !!!

Remember you can have a look at the activities in ARCHIVES (right margin on your Screen)

4th and 21st  July 2007 and you can also play a game which is in LINKS section item Nº 7 How technological are you?

Have fun learning English!

Public Services

Hello, participants: Thank you for your contributions in the previous post.

Please do not forget to sign your comments  with your name and the letter of course you are. E.g. Juan Perez Adults 5C   Most of you do it, but there are still people who do not.

I would like to remind you that if you have problems with any link or have a doubt with an exercise, please send a mail to: escuelaunlp@yahoo.com.ar instead of including it in the comment.

OK, ready for a new set of activities? Here we go!

Exercise 1: The topic this time will be Public Services. Public services is a Opinion Pollterm usually used to mean services provided by government to its citizens, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing private provision of services.

Look at the table on the left. Write in comments if you agree or not. Is there anyone missing?

Exercise 2: Do you know what number you must dial if you have an emergency? Was it easy or difficult to decide the emergency number in USA? Read about it. Click on the following link and see if Argentina and USA have the same emergency number. http://people.howstuffworks.com/question664.htm

Exercise 3: Let’s see how familiar you are with Transport vocabulary. What about a Hangman game? Click on this link and have fun:

http://www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish-central-games-hangman-transport.htm

Exercise 4: We are going to have a “tren bala” to Córdoba. Will it be useful or not? Unfortunately, trains do not work well in Argentina, but in some other countries they do. I invite you to read an article ( you have a glossary at the bottom of the article), and then do a comprehension exercise.

Exercise 5: Please, give us your opinion about Public Services by leaving a comment (no less than 5 lines, ok?) .

Exercise 6: Weak in pronounciation? Listen and repeat to these sounds

That is all for now, enjoy the activities!

Nelba.

Do you smoke?

Last week I went to Buenos Aires and got some free postcards with phrases against smoking such as:  Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke of recreational drugs.

no smokingExercise 1: Do you want to learn more about Smoking? Look at this link. It is an online Dictionary. Save it in you “Favorites” you may need it. Click on the following link:  http://dictionary.cambridge.org/  Online dictionaries are very useful. Personally I do not like looking up word in dictionaries… but online dictionaries are fast and they give you not only the meaning of a word but also synonyms, pronunciation and more…

Exercise 2: Going back to our topic… tobacco: What’s in a cigarette? What’s in a puff? Tobacco smoke contains about 4,000 chemicals. Some of which are harmful, others deadly. If you want to practise Reading… here is an article. Click on it : http://www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish-central-magazine-smoking.htm Why reading? It expands your vocabulary. The more you read, the more fluent you will become. You happen to know about different topics. While you read, you unconsciously incorporate spelling and grammar rules.

Exercise 3: Now I propose you to do a Jigsaw…it is a game. Have fun and put your brain at work! http://www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish-central-games-smoking-jigsaw.htm

Leave comments giving your opinion about the activities above. Which one did you like best? Why?

Module 7 - Socialising

socialisingHello, participants: Module 7 is about social behaviour. Well, we are going to work on behaviour on the Internet.

Do you know that there are social rules on the Web? These rules are called Net- tiquette.

Netiquette is a neologism formed from "network netiquette". It involves the conventions of politeness and respect recognized  in mailing lists, in live chat systems and on other electronic forums. These conventions address the relationship between netizens, and outline a dynamic set of guidelines for conduct that is conducive to pleasant, efficient and agreeable interaction.

Please, click HERE and enjoy a Power Point Presentation about Netiquette tips or on this link and read about it : http://www.learnthenet.com/english/html/09netiqt.htm

Your task is: write your answer to these questions in "comments"

Did you know about these rules? yes or no?

If yes, do you follow it?

Which one are you going to adopt immediately? Why?

What would you do if you received an e-mail breaking these rules?

Class in Computing Lab

Last Monday we had a class in the Computing Laboratory at Humanities College. We spent an hour learning how to work in the blog: leaving comments, visiting links where you can practise the language, reading last year posts.

I think it was useful for the people who are not very familiar with the Internet.

If you were present, please leave your comment giving your opinion about this class.

Thank you.

Oh, By the way, I took some photos and here they are. Click on "Ver todas las fotos"
